C’mero’s Monster of the Briny Depths Cetus Blue Aerulunth

Sweet as Honey Egg

This egg is the dream of love, and warmth, and laughter: the subtle glow of honeyed amber, thick with promise, fills this unlikely chalice; hope, the candle-flame of life flickers within the heart; joy dapples the apex with the cool rays of early morning light; passion, the sweet innocence of spring giving way to the first flush of summer's youth, is cloudy whorls of strawberry settling into the rotund base and deepening the tawny brew to dusky rose.

Hatching Message

Sweet as Honey Egg trembles under the threat of its prisoner’s escape, binding what lays within in its shell of honey and hope. A head spears through its light-dappled apex, glistening with goo; a forepaw shatters through sweet strawberry to find heated sand beneath. The rest of the egg splits and falls away, revealing what it hid from the world’s eyes: the Monster of the Briny Depths Cetus Blue Hatchling.

Monster of the Briny Depths Cetus Blue Dragonet

A thing belched forth from the depths of the sea, he is a leviathan blue, unrefined and untidy in ill-fitting hide. Shrouded in mystery, wide, deep-set eyes are framed in a disproportionately large head; unhinged, leering, a cavernous maw reveals razor-sharp teeth. Misaligned, storm-battered neckridges lead into broad and blocky shoulders, dredged with sea-sludge; freed of this, wings' precipitous rise is erratic and ill-defined. Barnacles encrust the ponderous curve of his dark-ridged belly and powerful haunches, lighter patterning fragmenting along the awkward curve of a silver-shiny tail.

Public Impression Pose

Monster of the Briny Depths Cetus Blue Dragonet seems to be at the point of working himself up for another charge. He spades sand with his muzzle, sending it in a spray. His wings flap anxiously. But when he moves forward again it is not at bolting speed, but at a cautious plod, marked slower by dawning hope. He weaves a little, not because his trajectory is uncertain but because he is quite clumsy with these unwieldy feet appendages. Still, he reaches his end point well enough, and gently, so gently, noses Cameron.

Private Impression Message

The touch of a mind against yours is a suggestion of cool damp. It seeps into you, through you, and begins to glow gently with a green-gold algae light. Shy delight shimmers, wavery and watery, sinking into you from without and drawn up from within, simultaneous. « Aerulunth, » comes identified in an echoey whisper, tenor's light softness coming to you reverberate as from the wet depths of a dark cavern. « Your Aerulunth. I love you, forever and always. »

It's good to have you aboard, C'mero! Ready to set sail with your Aerulunth? Good! We're so happy to have you here with us, that we built a seafaring baby for you! Mind, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we hope you like him, and we hope you like us, because now we've got you hooked! Congratulations!

Egg Inspiration

The Sweet as Honey Egg is based on the June Moon, known as the Mead or Strawberry Moon, and the Rose Moon to Colonial Americans. The Summer Solstice occurs around the 21st of June. It embodies the transition from youth to early adulthood and the birth of passion. It's also a major wedding month. Made from honey, in much the same way as beer is brewed, mead was traditionally the drink of weddings. It is sweet, thick, and, depending on what flowers the honey came from, incredibly intoxicating.

We mostly chose it because the idea of hatching your little monstrosity from such a sweet, warm egg was great – both because of its unexpectedness, and because Aerulunth himself is such a kind, gentle sort of soul.

Theme Inspiration

Cetus the sea-monster was a loyal servant of Lord Poseidon who plagued and pillaged under his orders in the form of a monstrous whale. The Princess Andromeda was chained to a rock as a sacrifice, that he might devour her and take her sweet young flesh as enough punishment for the queen’s vanity. Instead, Cetus was slain by Perseus astride gallant Pegasus (Kyrioth!). His image was hung in the stars to commemorate his role in the story.

The Cetus constellation is also sometimes associated with the monstrous whale that swallowed Jonah. Massive, impersonal, a servant of God’s will. Due to the story of Jonah, and probably also due to their massively impressive size, whales are often interpreted in literature as symbolic of unfathomable nature and sometimes, destruction.

But though whales in mythology are painted with a monstrous brush, whales are actually harmless creatures with gentle souls and surprising intelligence. The more massive and terrifying they appear, the more likely they are to eat nothing but plankton sifted through their baleen.

Aerulunth is drawn from both of these sources, in honor of his constellation: from the monsters of myth, whose fearsome aspect he has partially stolen, and the gentle mammals of the ocean, whose spirit his resembles.

Description Inspiration

In describing him we drew inspiration from Cadgwith, his mother. She is a sea monster; he is a sea monster cast in her image. Aerulunth’s body marks him truly as her son, he more than any other in this clutch. He has her bulk (in minature!); the hide that doesn't quite fit and scrunches and bunches; the sea-dredged coloration; that little bit of silver at his tail; the way nothing really seems in proportion to itself. As for the rest of him, we invoke the whale in the wider set of his head, his eyes and ridged belly. So there he is, monstrous in aspect, in all his barnacled glory!

Name Inspiration

We had quite a difficult time trying to come up with an appropriate name for your Aerulunth. We went through every kid of known language along with every type of sea monster legend there is to find something that felt right! It wasn’t until Pyrene said to look into Elfish languages that we finally found your Aerulunth. Taken from the Sindarin Elves, we got “Aer” and “Ulun”. These two words combined to basically mean “Sea Monster”, and formed to create the name “Aerulunth”. It was love at first sight for all of us, and so his name stuck, and you, C’mero, have your very own sea monster dragon!

The touch of Aerulunth’s mind is all wet hollows and luminescence. There is a watery glow to his mindvoice, gleaming green-gold as though it is thick with algae. He often speaks with a sense of echo as one speaking in a deep cavern, where water laps at stone walls and sound is magnified and bounces from every direction. More often than not, the touch of his mind will bring the suggestion of salt spray, sea air, and the lingering tincture of fish. His voice is a soft, mellifluous tenor. It rolls and ripples. More often than not, there is a gentle rhythm to his cadence, tidal and mesmeric.

He uses color a great deal, for emphasis and to carry emotion, but it varies more in intensity and shade than it does in hue: he favors greens and blues almost exclusively. He favors words over images; rarely will he communicate imagistically beyond the sense of color.

When he is agitated or angry, color grows more intense, darker and sharper, and his vocal cadence will no longer be so even and peaceful; the tides will grow stronger and more dramatic, crashing waves of color and sound.

On the ground, Aerulunth … lumbers. His body’s proportion gives him a rolling gait that is just slightly off, and it is not uncommon for him in his youth to stumble and crash altogether, so expect to spend some time with the dragonhealers in early weyrlinghood! There is a clattering uncertainty to each step that he will eventually learn to compensate for, but he will never be wholly at home on the ground. The air and the ocean are his favored elements. He shares this land-bound awkwardness both with his delphine sister Surayath and with his sea-monster mother, Cadgwith.

In the air, though, he’s built to fly. In marked contrast to his ungainliness on the ground, in flight he is fluid gace. Though he’s not too pretty, his frame is wrought with a strength that gives him the edge of stamina over other blues, while his relative size and agility still gives him that bluey edge over most browns.

As his true home is the air, he makes a second one in the water. The graceless waddle and flop of his groundbound bulk is replaced by a smooth ease granted him by the water. He swims as though he was born to do it, unlikely as the swift paddling grace might appear from the first glance at his form.

Here's to those who love not too wisely, no not wisely, but too well
To the girl who sighs with envy when she hears that wedding bell
To the guy who'd throw a party if he knew someone to call
Here's to the losers, bless them all

Here's to those who drink their dinners when that lady doesn't show
To the girl who'll wait for kisses underneath that mistletoe
To the lonely summer lovers when the leaves begin to fall
Here's to the losers, a-bless them all

Hey, Tom, Dick and Harry, come in out of the rain
Those torches you carry must be drowned in champagne

Here's the last toast of the evening, here's to those who still believe
All the losers will be winners, all the givers shall receive
Here's to trouble-free tomorrows, may your sorrows all be small
Here's to the losers, bless them all

Hey, Tom, Dick and Harry, come in out of that rain
Those torches you carry must be drowned in champagne

Here's the last toast of the evening, here's to those who still believe
All the losers will be winners, all the givers shall receive
Here's to trouble-free tomorrows, may your sorrows all be small
Here's to the losers, here's to the losers, here's to the losers
Bless them all!
– “Here’s to the Losers,” Frank Sinatra

The thing about Aerulunth is that he is near eternally optimistic.

He’s by no means stupid, although his intelligence is more intuitive than clever. Sharp wit and brilliant intellect are not his tools. He is more emotionally smart than he is a great planner or genius mind. It’s just that regardless of situation, he really believes that everything will come out right in the end.

His assurance of this is genuine. He is a gentle presence in your mind most of the time, softening blows and disappointments and shoring you up when you start to feel low. He is young at heart and like to stay that way, a touch sweeter than is perhaps good for him especially considering his appearance, and a little on the naïve side.

He’s kind of a heart on his sleeve type, which means it’s likely to get broken more often than not. Since he’s sort of shy and emotionally vulnerable, it’s up to you to provide him with similar assurance to that he regularly provides for you!

George Costanza: I want to make a good entrance. I never make good entrances.
Jerry: You have made some good exits.
- Seinfeld

Aerulunth is one of those guys who will always be the nerd, no matter how hard he tries. He'll practice hard on his weyrling drills, he'll be rigorous in performing sweeps and do his best to perfect any skill that's ever required of him. But he's never going to be a dragon to turn heads (at least, not admiring heads!). While it's unlikely to bother C'mero, the great tragedy of Aerulunth's life is that he is always the blue and never the bronze.

He probably won't get on with male dragons very well. He'll be wistfully jealous of Aojadinth's dazzle, while Luileeuth's laissez faire attitude will infuriate him at times. How can a dragon put no effort in and still have everything he wants? Perhaps he will eventually come to understand that it all depends on /what/ you want. Until then, C'mero,
expect to do a great deal of reassuring.

On the other hand, he is every girl's best friend! When it comes to the fairer sex, Aerulunth is actually more comfortable than around his fellow males, partly because he doesn't feel so much in competition with them. His gentle brand of friendliness and consistent good humour will endear him to most of the greens and golds of the Weyr—although beware some of the crueler greens who may amuse themselves by toying with his emotions. But nicer or simpler (or both) females will probably end up being his confidantes and he theirs.

Of course, as everybody knows, if you're the guy who she gossips about her dates with, you're never going to be the guy she dates. Dragons may not exactly date, but Aerulunth will cuddle up to more greens on the bowl's floor than he twines necks with in the air. He’ll frequently be the one soothing out heartaches, should some green get to attatched to her catcher – especially if that catcher doesn’t reciprocate her affection!

Monica: Chandler. It happens to lots of guys. You-you-you were probably tired, you had a lot of champagne, don't worry about it.
Chandler: I'm not worried, I'm uh, I'm fascinated. Y'know it's like uh, Biology. Which is funny because in high school I uh, I-I failed Biology and tonight Biology failed me.

From the moment he realises what maturity is, one of his biggest goals will be to win his first mating flight. He will spend hours of his free time practising, and building up his confidence to critical level.

« See, there's that small strip of bare earth next to the glacier—not many dragons think to use that thermal. And I won't get caught by that wind funnel this time! »

Sadly, inevitably, he'll be disappointed more often than not. Each lost flight comes as a crushing blow to him, and his bubbling eagerness in your mind will reduce into a tiny trickle of insecurity. He will not ask for C'mero at these times, but he will need him.

Of course, every now and then, he will win a flight. Immediately his spirits will rise, and he'll be almost ridiculously proud of himself. Aerulunth, ladies man! That's who he is! Hah! Dashing, suave, debonair…. And of course, wildly in love. Yes, each successful
flight is followed by a high in which Aerulunth is besotted with the lucky green.

« Oh, C'mero, wasn't it wonderful? She's just perfect! And you had such fun with her rider too. Maybe we could all weyrmate—wouldn't that be great? »

George: Hi, my name is George, I'm unemployed and I live with my parents.
- Seinfeld

The Interval will be a concern to Aerulunth. He needs to prove himself, and he always feels that by not being able to fight Thread, he’s missed out on the ultimate way to prove himself. Which means he’ll throw himself wholesale into anything that comes up. Your task will be in making him stick to something.

« Did you know that Oljeitukhodath runs messages all over Pern? We could do that! »
“I thought we were planning on talking to Mailli about what we can do for the dolphin hall when we graduate?”
« Oh… oh yeah. Can we do both? Maybe we can do the dolphins for a bit and then do the messages? The messages really sound like fun! I like Oljeitukhodath lots! »

He forgets very quickly, which is often just as well. His disappointments are crushing but fleeting and then he’s up and ready to try again. You’ll be there to help him and support him, and you’ll realise more of his dreams than you might first have expected. He won’t always remember that, but it won’t matter to him. He lives in the here and now, and here and now he loves you.

We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dream. Wandering by lone sea breakers, and sitting by desolate streams. World losers and world forsakers, for whom the pale moon gleams. Yet we are movers and the shakers of the world forever it seems.
